Lacking in vitamin D, what symptoms can you have?

Vitamin D is a nutrient crucial to bone, skin and mental health. The problem is [many of us] assume if you have a healthy diet that you're getting enough of every nutrient. However, in fact, this nutrient is hard to get from food—so you need to be extra vigilant and keep an eye out for these clues you may not be getting enough.

1. Allergies - A nationwide study of over 6,000 individuals showed that allergic sensitization was more common in those with vitamin D levels under 15 ng/mL versus those with levels 30 ng/mL or more.

2. Depression - According to a study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, women with low levels of D are twice as likely to combat depression.

3. Cardiovascular disease - Congestive heart failure is associated with vitamin D deficiency. Research conducted at Harvard University among nurses found that women with low vitamin D levels had a 67 percent increased risk of developing hypertension.

4. Periodontal disease - Those suffering from this chronic gum disease that causes swelling and bleeding gums should consider raising their vitamin D levels to produce compounds that contain microbial properties and lower the number of bacteria in the mouth. A 47% reduced risk of cavities was found with vitamin D supplementation.

5. Rheumatoid Arthritis - RA is a devastating disease that causes systemic inflammation, severe pain and joint damage. Studies have shown that vitamin D can ease the pain and stiffness associated with RA.

6. Muscle Weakness - Decreased muscular size can be the result of not enough vitamin D in muscle and nerve tissue, says Kimberly Mueller, R.D., owner of Fuel Factor Nutrition Coaching. So if you notice that you can't eek out the same number of reps you've always done, that may be a sign you need more vitamin D.

7. Cancer - Less exposure to sun (the source of vitamin D) leads to more deaths from cancers. Once you have vitamin D deficiencies, you have a higher risk of several kinds of cancers including breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer.

8. Diabetes - An article from World's Healthiest Foods (4) lists poor blood-sugar control as a symptom of vitamin D deficiency. This, in turn, can increase the risk of developing diabetes.
